The Shores of Seward

After uploading the blog at the local cafe we walked through the rest of downtown and tried to do some clothes shopping. We didn’t find anything worth spending our money on but we did stumble upon a candy shop where we enjoyed some Gelato (first time for me). Walking the rest of the town while eating our Hazelnut and Cookies and Cream it once again began to rain. The town of Seward is a nice waterfront town that has a homey feel to it. We began wondering why we weren’t taking more pictures and then realized that we had been to so many pictursque towns that taking pictures of buildings was getting kind of boring. Smart-ass Ricki then took this picture... its the sidewalk in Seward.

As our walking tour came to an end we made our way south to Lowell Point. There is a small recreational area there where we had planned to make dinner. Upon arriving the grass was littered with dog poop and there was no shelter from the rain so we headed back into town. Yesterday we had come down here as well and saw a cool old ship that was washed up on shore. Taking a mental note that we should take some pictures of we decided to get the shots today even though it was raining. Since we have had such great luck on this trip we should have not been surprised to see that today was the day the ship was getting torn up so we have a picture of half of a washed up ship.

Finding some trees in the campground we spent the night in the day before we made dinner. After experiencing some technical difficulties with our stove (3 foot flames due to excess fuel) Ricki made some delicious quesadillas.

Packing up our dishes we headed to the boardwalk where we enjoyed the silence of the pond and watched seagulls try to catch small fish jumping out of the water. Around 9 pm we headed into the other side of town, which was a lot more tourist orientated and had some massive fishing boats at the local warf.

We found a store that basically carried everything we would ever need, included a new lighter (I sat on the last two and broke them). In the store we found the perfect shirt to describe the weather in Alaska. While this may not always be the case, this is how we saw it.

Setting up camp in the park adjacent to our last one we showed our tent to an elderly German couple. They were not only excited by a tent on the roof, but also by the fact that the hand dryers in the washroom blew hot air... we chuckled politely.

We are now sitting in the local Laundry room where we are finally washing all our clothes. While $3.25 per machine seemed ridiculously high to us it is the only facility in town. Today we plan on hiking the Exit Glacier, while the hike should take us about 4 hours one way, we may not do the whole thing, everything around here is either weather dependant or tide dependant which seems to be ruining a lot of our plans since we always seem to be missing the perfect days.
